We published a blog a few weeks ago about citizen journalism, where we recognized  the idea that just about anyone can be a videographer, or at least wear a videographer’s hat for a day. Modern technology has given countless people access to the kinds of tools needed to capture relevant news footage as it’s happening. The rise of citizen journalism means that virtually anyone can report on virtually any event.

Periscope is taking that idea to a whole new level.  

“It may sound crazy, but we wanted to build the closest thing to teleportation,”  the company wrote in a post on its website. Periscope, which was acquired by Twitter in January, allows users to stream live video from their iPhone, and has amassed a whopping 10 million registered users. A TechCrunch article said that as of mid-August, all of the app’s users combined were streaming over 350,000 hours of video a day. All in all, that means that collective amount of video streamed on the app is equal to over 40 human lifetimes.

Periscope will eventually become more than just an iPhone app – (or at least that’s what people are saying.) It’s been rumored that the company is developing an app for the new Apple TV that will allow users to watch live Periscope footage on their TV screens. In another article, TechCrunch reported that Apple TV will function like the Periscope website, which allows users to watch live footage but, of course, limits them when it comes to uploading their own streams.

So, what are people watching on Periscope? Well, there’s TIME’s live footage from the migrant crisis on the Hungarian border, as well as a few popular live streams Apple’s big event, including a firsthand look at the new iPad Pro and a post-event chat with Verge reporter Casey Newton. You can check out these newsworthy “recent streams” on the app right now, but Periscope makes it really easy to access other streams, too. It’s not all about following the big news channels. Periscope also functions sort of like a hybrid mix of Snapchat and Skype because it allows users to watch live streams from their contacts, but its structure is that of a social network.

We love everything about Periscope, because it really complements what we’re doing for video here at Wispeo. So we thought we’d talk about how to best utilize the convenient camera, especially when shooting video. The folks over at Wistia posted a blog about the best ways to capture video on an iPhone, and we were so impressed by their tips, that we thought we’d share some of our favorites and talk a little bit more about how these tips can be adapted in the wild (outside of the office).

Keep scrolling to see a few ways that you can maximize the quality of your iPhone video:

First off,  people frequently make their first mistake before they even start filming: They don’t use a tripod. Instead, they opt for a simpler method like holding their hands really still.

Nobody can hold as still as a tripod (so don’t even try). The only time a tripod may not be better than just holding your iPhone is maybe if you’re on a boat and the ground the tripod is on is moving, but other than that, always shoot with a tripod.

Tripods are also great for shooting video on an iPhone, because they also allow for horizontal filming – a much better option than vertical. Vertical video will leave bars on the side when shown on TVs, computers, and most screens outside of a phone. So if you want your video to have life outside of a phone, make sure you shoot it horizontally.

The built in flash may also seem tempting, but only use it if studio light or natural light is unavailable. The exposure lock feature helps create constant lighting for the video. Make sure the exposure is locked. If it’s not, the iPhone will change focus and increase exposure throughout the filming process, which creates jumpy looking video.

When focusing your video, avoid the zoom feature. The zoom on the iPhone is digital – not optical. So zooming in will only result in a pixilated video. Any zooming or editing should be done after the video is shot. There are some great editing apps available for iOS, but for the best possible quality, a computer is your best bet.

Since Wispeo is so new (beta for desktop available here, mobile app soon available), we wanted to show you how Wispeo compares to some other more and less well known ways to share photos and videos out there in the wild.

When we first started to see a need for Wispeo, we asked people how they usually shared video files. From professional videographers to stay-at-home moms, they gave us several different ways they’ve cobbled together a solution to send video – though no one solution worked for them every time, they basically boiled down to a couple options: cloud storage (like Dropbox accounts), large file transfer sites (like WeTransfer), uploading a video to YouTube and downloading it in a new format (seriously, it’s a thing), text message, social media, a flash drive (do people still have those?), and – last but not least – email.

All of these are options we’ve used more than once ourselves, but none of these options do everything we frequently need them to in order to get high resolution video off our phones or desktops into a usable format on another device. And most of them are a real pain most of the time.

A couple clarifications. When we talk about how Wispeo compares to social media as a whole we’re mostly thinking about the bigger photo and video sharing platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Vine, and Snapchat.

When we compare Wispeo to cloud storage options we’re thinking mostly of DropBox since it’s what we’re most familiar with (and most of the other 400 million Dropbox users probably are too). We know, we know, iCloud and Google Drive are also cloud storage options, but they don’t have quite the same features that Dropbox does that make it easier to share video, but you could probably insert either one into the matrix above and it would still be true.

Also, we only compared Wispeo to WeTransfer and not other large file transfer sites since other sites don’t have quite the robust user and feature base they do. And when we shrug at WeTransfer’s app, it’s not that the app features don’t get the job done, it’s just that the app crashes A LOT when we try to use it and it takes an awfully long time.

First, I’ll start with why I like Wispeo. I just had my first baby. Before I wasn’t very good at taking pictures or video, but now I realize the absolute importance of recording every single laugh, smile, and messy meal. And sharing it with my family is so important. Eric – a fan of Wispeo – worked at a physical therapy clinic. W: Can you tell us how you got your start?
RA: I used to be a huge mountain biker and loved to carry around a point and shoot camera to capture my surroundings. I always wanted to get more into it, but never really did because I was so into riding. Once I was diagnosed with Crohns disease I wasn’t able to mountain bike. This gave me the opportunity to reevaluate what I wanted to do as a hobby to get me outside and explore. I bought a DSL on sale and then it began. I have only been shooting seriously or a year and a half. I have been revisiting the places that I have rode on foot, slower yes but I see all that I missed.

W: What is your biggest inspiration?
RA: People around me for sure. We all have trials in our lives and we can fight or loose the battle. That pushes me to get out even when it’s a battle and I usually feel better when I do and that is mostly psychological. I am really inspired by the landscape around me, living in Utah there is beauty and nature to explore all around me. History is a big influence too. I love taking pictures of old buildings, they have so much caricature and craftsmanship in them. I also look to other photographers on Instagram and Flicker to be inspired.
