Featured Creative: Wedding Videographer McKenna Fullmer

M
cKenna Fullmer is a young and talented wedding videographer with a gift for documentary style videos. She captures moments as they are happening, allowing people’s true personalities to shine through.

I think I have an eye for catching moments that can’t be recreated – I don’t do much posing when I film weddings. I let them be real and I let them do what makes them feel comfortable. I think that portrays well in the final edit :)

W: How did you get your start?

KF: Inspiration from other videographers pushed me to buy my own camera. I had no idea how to use it. I researched online, watched tutorials, and took classes. I started to spread the word that I loved to film, and soon enough I got contacted to film a wedding, mind you it wasn’t very good. At all. But everyone starts somewhere!

W: What do you enjoy about shooting weddings?

KF: I enjoy shooting weddings because no matter where it is or who it is, so much thought, time and effort is put into making that day incredible, so you feel extra motivated to capture the beauty of the event. I love filming love. There’s nothing like the happiness of a wedding day. I feel honored that I am able to make wedding videos!

W: What challenges arise from shooting weddings?

KF: Challenges from shooting weddings. I would say weather is a big challenge, it’s either windy, raining, or the sun is waayyy too bright. Weddings around 5 PM are usually perfect :) Another challenge is deciding if you want to use a Glidecam or a Monopod. It’s too hard to carry both around so you have to decide based on what you are shooting. If only they made Monopods easier to carry 😉

W: If you had a trademark shot, what would it be?

KF: A low shot of a couple kissing in front of the sunset. Slow motion of course!

W: What other types of videos do you like to film?

KF: I love love love filming documentaries. If I could travel around the world filming stories and lives that would be a dream. Also MISSIONARY HOMECOMINGS. With a boyfriend that just left on an LDS mission, it gets me really excited when I get to go to the airport and watch a mom become reunited with her son after two years.

W: What’s your inspiration?

KF: My inspiration comes from telling a story with a film. There’s nothing like watching a video that brings you to tears. It becomes more than just a film.

W: Do you have a defined style?

KF: I think my style would be defined as “filmie” looking. Colorgrading with VSCO helps that look a ton. Most of my shots are still, with a glide going up, down, or side to side. Light leaks as a finishing touch!

W: How do you choose the music for your videos?

KF: I give the bride an option to send me 5 songs she would like in her wedding video. It’s not my day, it’s hers, so I believe letting them choose is appropriate! (Unless they can’t think of any, then I usually use music from the music bed).

W: What does your editing process consist of?

KF: Downloading all the files, colorgrading them, putting the colored clips in final cut pro, editing the footage in chronological order, exporting to Vimeo, then last, but not least, sharing with family and friends!

W: Do you feel like there’s something about your work that sets you apart from others in the industry?

KF: I think I have an eye for catching moments that can’t be recreated – I don’t do much posing when I film weddings. I let them be real and I let them do what makes them feel comfortable. I think that portrays well in the final edit :)
