I started about 6 months ago a project of traveling solo without an agenda, in other words:

You Choose – I Go.

At least that was the concept. How did it work? I would ask my FB friends where I should go next. With no plan or tickets ahead – just I go wherever they told me to go. The most votes/comments would determine my next destination.

How did I manage to cover this idea (economically)? 

I work as a designer full time. I work from Monday-Friday, but remotely, so it allows me to work wherever I want as long as I have a good WiFi connection. So I said “WHY NOT?” Gotta travel right?

My first destination was Italy. I spent two weeks sailing across Amalfi Coast, Pompei and Sorrento. I made a couple films, and people (friends mostly) started to react positively, so I got motivated on this whole idea of travel + video + anywhere. I decided to stick to it and continued doing this for:

Barcelona, Egypt, Turkey & India.

I started realising my friends were my biggest motivation, but I needed to push this a bit further and get people outside to watch too, including analytics on who is watching my stuff.

So I decided to start a mini-series in India called “inda por media calle” – it translates in English “India in the middle of the streets.”

It’s a Costa Rican slang term we use for people that for some crazy reason decide to walk in the middle of the road instead of the sidewalk. So since my biggest audience was Costa Rican, they identified with and loved the concept.

Basically, I have never really given importance to Facebook Pages before, so I decided to start one for my travel videos – I called it “Lost N Free.”

It rapidly took off. Friends started sharing it, and in the first five days I was up 2000 followers. I was impressed and shocked how well these mini-vids were enticing people to follow and watch more.

Once India was completed, I took a short break at my brother’s house in London to begin editing the film “Land of Kings,” which took me about three weeks to prepare and launch.

MUSIC

I had started a playlist for all the locations/countries I visit prior to arriving via Spotify .

For Iceland, I had a good idea for the feeling + style of music, but the Track “Solo Dancing by Indiana” was chosen right on the last day on my way back home. It was like those glorious moments where it was extremely rainy and hard to drive, and then suddenly the track starts to play and I saw a huge ray of sunlight shine through the whole sky, and that moment sparks.

My whole body went numb when it all clicked together. It was so cool. I had goosebumps running down my spine and chicken-skin all over.

The editing process started in my head almost after hearing the song, repeating it 100 times on my way home. I had the whole video in my head, seriously – everything I had captured was already put together in my head, and I was so excited. I needed to get home and start the edit as fast as possible.

I am glad I did. It took me about three days in total to get all footage indexed, filtered, rough cut, preparing the sound to make it shorter, color grading it, and adjusting everything to match the flow nicely. I was finally happy with it, and decided to give it an early launch.

Unfortunately it didn’t make it into the “Vimeo Staff Pick,” but they certainly loved it so much they put my video in top Travel & Performance films category!

I am extremely satisfied with how it ended up, short film with a bit of a my own flavour of Iceland – a very personal experience alone in heaven.

Even if your videos aren’t super artistic or you’re not a professional, Vimeo is definitely the best alternative to YouTube in terms of platform support, audience, and metrics.

2. Facebook – The social media giant is seriously gunning to become more than just the place where your friends post too many baby or vacation pictures or a place you scroll through when you’re bored. They’ve made several big improvements to their video platform, including sharing ad revenue with video creators, putting their video platform in direct competition with YouTube. If you’re looking for a platform with a large audience base, Facebook will definitely work well for you (when a near quarter of the world’s population is on the platform, audience is the last thing you need to worry about). But if you’re looking for longevity you might be better off with Vimeo, once a video passes out of users’ newsfeeds, it tends to drop significantly in its engagement – something Facebook will need to figure out if they want to be a serious contender in the video hosting world.

3. Video Monetization Sites – If you’re more interested in monetizing your videos rather than having lots of people view them, you may want to consider one of the many platforms for video monetization. These sites are as far from YouTube as you can get, but if you’re serious about licensing your video content, and have a pretty solid list of customers interested in doing it, this might be a good option for you. Typically these sites will allow you to have  personally branded page that hosts only your content that you can drive potential customers to so they can view and license your content. Some companies that you may want to consider if you go this route: Brightcove, MediaShowroom, or Kaltura are good options depending on what you want out of your video management platforms.

No matter what platform you end up choosing to go with – even if you’re sticking with YouTube, you need a simple and effective way to move your videos around. It sounds like it could be a pretty sweet deal, and is definitely positioning YouTube as more than just an amateur video creator platform or home for weird cat videos, with YouTube gunning to create original content for YouTube Red following Netflix’s success with its original programming … though YouTube’s original content offerings definitely take a different direction in their themes, focusing on creating partnerships with some of YouTube’s current top stars.

We’ll see if YouTube’s current user demographic (used to getting everything for free and skewing pretty young) will pony up the cash for the subscription. If you do decide to go with the subscription option, definitely wait to get it on October 28 directly from YouTube on the web, you’ll pay an extra three dollars through Apple’s in-app purchase platform. Then you can sign in to the app and get the benefits on your phone without Apple’s 30% mark up.

We’re not sure how the new subscription service will affect content creators. Some things seem somewhat alarming at first blush – like the fact that creators who don’t agree to the new subscription terms will have their videos marked as private and they won’t be able to be seen by anyone. But YouTube says 99% of their content creators have agreed to the new subscription terms. So maybe marking only 1% of videos private won’t be that big of a deal.

YouTube also hasn’t laid out how they’ll share revenue with content creators. They have said that the “majority” of revenue will go to the creators, but that’s a pretty vague term. Currently content creators get 55 percent of the advertising revenue on their videos. In theory, this should only help add revenue for content creators, right? They’ll still get their ad-supported revenue from the free YouTube, and then the official YouTube blog says, “YouTube Red will play an important role in expanding user engagement on YouTube and provide creators like you with an additional way to get paid for the content you’re already creating.” Unless however they carve out $9.99 between all the videos subscribers watch ends up coming out far less than what the content creator would have gotten with ads.

Right now is probably not the time to worry. We’ll see how things go when the service is released to the masses on the 28th. We just hope that YouTube will still continue to be the awesome place we can go to find great videos from great artists.

There are so many ideas about how to make a viral video and as time progresses and it gets harder to go viral, those ideas are changing, but there are a few common trends.

People Plan

Not everyone takes the time to plan out exactly how they are going to execute a viral video. In fact, there is really no way to predict whether your video will successfully go viral, but as Karen Cheng (creator of the viral video Girl Learns to Dance in a Year) will tell you, planning makes going viral feasible. Think of the 5 “W”s you learned in elementary school – except we are modifying it to be 3 – who, what, and why. “Who” is the people you plan on contacting to get involved with making the video viral. That includes friends, family, businesses, and anyone else you think might give you some attention. “What” is the content of the video that makes it worth going viral. “Why” is the reason people will make it a viral success (more on this later). In addition to these questions, thinking about the length of the video will also influence its success. People don’t have the patience to watch extended videos anymore, they want the entertainment to come fast and end fast. As you plan out your video, asking yourself these questions will help point you in the right direction.

The Element of Surprise

This is the “what” and “why” of viral videos because, as Kissmetrics emphasizes, content is the key to success. “What” and “why” determine the nature of the video and the reason behind it going viral whether it’s because it’s completely stupid, a great ad, or practical advice. Whatever route your video takes, the most important element is surprise. Get creative and don’t let norms of what people expect to see block your thinking. Most likely you will have to go through some trial and error to figure out what is surprising to people and what is unimpressive, but keep trying. In the end all that matters to the viewer is that they are entertained (even if it is not for the reasons you thought they would be).

Garner Support

This goes back to the “who” question. Who are you going to contact to help make your video viral? Sharing with friends will do a lot. Individually contacting them and asking them to continue sharing will do even more. But that may not be enough no matter how popular you are. You have to tap into a much larger, well-known network for something to go viral. This is what Kevin Allocca, the YouTube trend manager, calls “tastemakers.” Essentially, gaining the support of one tastemaker, such as Ellen Degeneres, or any other celebrity for that matter, will make you a success because they have thousands if not millions of fans that hang on every word they say. One share from them and you have gone viral.

Remember that virality is not always by chance. You make it happen by planning out all the details from “who” to “why.” Making the content surprising in some way will increase your chances of going viral. Most importantly, there is no way you will be able to make a viral video on your own, so network and see how much attention you can generate.

Zorb Balls – You know the Indiana Jones ride at Disneyland that almost drops the ball on you, but you always manage to escape just in time? With this blow up toy, there’s no escaping once you’re in its path.

Mobile – If your average, everyday parkour isn’t exciting enough, put some wheels under yourself and see what happens (and don’t try this at home).

Assassin’s Creed – There are several Assassin’s Creed videos, and they’ve only grown in intricacy, size, and scope as Devinsupertramp’s fame has exploded.

Travel – Devinsupertramp is known mainly for his adventure and extreme sports videos, but he is a truly talented travel videographer. He’s been all over the world, and his videos share some of the cultures and sites he’s had the privilege of visiting.

Artistic – And then there’s Devinsupertramp’s artistic side. We wouldn’t exactly call dancing with fire on your ice skates safe, but what could go wrong with mixing fire and ice?
